What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a liquid solution comprising of two parts: plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid component of blood – a combination of proteins and water – that facilitates movement of red and white blood cells. Platelets are blood cells responsible for blood clots and healing. To create platelet-rich plasma, doctors draw plasma from a donor, then separates the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood sample. Autologous PRP comes from the patient. And patients with low platelet counts may benefit from a variety of products that promote platelet generation, such as platelet-rich growth factors, platelet-rich fibrin, and platelet concentrates.

PRP For Hair Loss

As we age, hair loss is a common issue. We know how important your hair can be to your overall confidence. Everyone wants to keep the thick, natural hair they had throughout their life. As the hair starts to thin and ultimately fall out, it can be a very disheartening. That’s why PRP can help restore those beautiful locks and in turn, restore your confidence.

PRP is a great solution for people suffering from hair loss or men suffering from male pattern baldness. PRP can trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. There are numerous scientific backed studies that have proven the effectiveness of PRP for hair loss and regrowing hair follicles.

What Else Can Platelet-Rich Plasma Treat?

Doctors use PRP shots from blood drawn from the patient by injecting the PRP into an injured or afflicted part of the patient’s body. PRP can assist with cosmetic procedures such as face lifts and combatting hair loss. PRP shots applied to the scalp every four to six weeks are how medical providers can help patients combat the effects of hair loss.

PRP is especially effective for patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). PRP shots are also used to treat injuries such as muscle injuries, torn tendons, and joint injuries. PRP shots can also help manage conditions associated with chronic pain such as arthritis and tendinitis. PRP shots can also reduce the recovery time after a surgical procedure.

Issues to Consider Prior to Receiving Platelet-Rich Plasma

PRP shots do not have immediate results; PRP shots can take from six weeks to six months to have measurable effects. Patients will have to cease taking blood-thinning medications – such as aspirin and ibuprofen – prior to receiving PRP shots. In addition, patients will have to stop taking certain supplements and vitamins such as omega-3 fatty acids before receiving PRP shots. Since extracting and injecting PRP shots involves drawing patients’ blood, patients should eat well prior to the procedure to avoid lightheadedness or losing consciousness. Patients should refrain from washing the areas where the PRP shots were applied for 48 hours after the injections. Patients who have anemia, cancer, or infections cannot receive PRP shot therapy. And health insurance plans may not cover PRP shots, especially when PRP shots are used for cosmetic purposes.

How is Platelet-Rich Plasma performed?

PRP is a liquid fluid composed of two components: plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion of blood – a mixture of proteins and water – that enables red and white blood cells to travel freely. Platelets are blood cells that aid in the formation of blood clots and wound healing. To produce platelet-rich plasma, physicians draw plasma from a donor and then remove the platelet-rich plasma from the remaining blood sample. PRP is autologous, meaning it comes from the patient. Additionally, patients with low platelet counts can benefit from a combination of platelet-rich growth factors, platelet-rich fibrin, and platelet concentrates.

Hair Loss With PRP

Hair loss is a natural occurrence for some that either comes with age or is the result of other medical issues. Interestingly, hair is very important for an individual’s self-confidence. We all want to keep our thick, shiny hair looking great forever. So when hair begins to thin and eventually fall out, it can be very depressing. That is why PRP assists in restoring those gorgeous locks and, in turn, your confidence.

PRP is an excellent treatment option for individuals experiencing hair loss or for males experiencing male pattern baldness. It can stimulate and sustain natural hair growth by increasing the blood flow to the hair follicle and thickening the hair shaft. Numerous clinical trials have shown the effectiveness of PRP in treating hair loss and regrowing hair follicles.

Health practitioners can assist patients in combating the symptoms of hair loss by administering PRP shots to the scalp every four to six weeks. PRP is particularly beneficial for people suffering from androgenetic alopecia (AGA).

Reduce Wrinkles and Fine Lines With PRP

Lines and wrinkles are two of the most often cited reasons for seeking a vampire facial. These typical signs of aging are treated by promoting cellular turnover. The recycling of old skin cells results in the formation of fresh skin cells, collagen, and elastin. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced in part as a result of the facial skin spontaneously tightening in reaction to the micro-injuries created during therapy. When empty regions of the face are plumped up, the presence of deeper wrinkles is often reduced.

PRP for Tighter, Younger-Looking Skin

Collagen, as previously noted, is often essential for tight, firm skin. Though your skin does sag when you age, wrinkles and lines do not always grow. With age, facial skin often thins, and some areas of the face, such as the lips and cheeks, are prone to being visibly thin and gaunt. Collagen helps to plump the skin. Some may opt for a vampire facial to plump up their lips. Others use it to contour their cheeks naturally, without undergoing an unnecessary surgical operation.

What Other Conditions Should Platelet-Rich Plasma Be Used For Treatment?

Doctors administer PRP shots to patients using blood drawn from the recipient. The PRP is then injected into an injured or afflicted area of the patient’s body. These injections are used to manage muscle fractures, broken tendons, and joint injuries.

Additionally, PRP injections may aid in the management of chronic pain-related disorders such as arthritis and tendinitis and can also shorten the healing period after a surgical procedure.

Consider the Following When Receiving Platelet-Rich Plasma:

  • PRP injections do not produce instant results; they require about six weeks to six months to produce visible results.
  • Before getting PRP injections, patients must abstain from blood-thinning drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
  • Additionally, patients must abstain from nutrients and vitamins such as omega-3 fatty acids before receiving PRP injections.
  • Because collecting and administering PRP shots requires taking blood from the patient, patients should eat well prior to the procedure to prevent becoming lightheaded or losing consciousness.
  • Patients should avoid cleaning the areas where PRP injections were administered for 48 hours after the injections.
  • Patients who are anemic, have tumors, or are suffering from an infection are not eligible for a PRP shot treatment.
  • Additionally, health insurance providers may not cover PRP injections, especially when used for cosmetic purposes.
